Aere's Original Compositions For Orchestra

Though I started out with the goal of composing a symphony, that is long, involved piece, using sonata allegro form. I chose to start out with simpler, shorter pieces, as I learn my craft.

With a few exceptions, a tone poem, or symphonic poem better suits my needs so far, and gives me a lot of flexibility.

Symphonic Poem # 1 – Ashes to Ashes

I composed this piece as a proof-of-concept test, for composing symphonic music (scores and individual parts) on my computer using MuseScore. It is my first real attempt at composing for symphony orchestra, with results so good, that it ‘opened the floodgates’ for more of my compositions.

The subtitle alludes to an individual life, growing in experience, to middle-age power and competence, more complex at the end, but gradually fading away at the end.

I was surprised in this piece, that I tended to gravitate toward multiple simultaneous contrapuntal melodies. Though I am not the biggest fan of Bach, it was turning into a fugue. Interesting.

Nocturne

This piece is my orchestration of my earlier synthesizer composition of the same name. It is now the definitive version of that composition.

A Little Night Music”, this is definitely not. But rather, a distillation of my life experience, coming through my ‘long night of despair’. Sometimes, I think, difficult times cause the best music, in a composer.

In addition to the symphony orchestra, it has parts for a soprano, and tenor wordless choir.

Symphonic Poem # 2 – Goodbye, Hello

This piece is my orchestration of my earlier synthesizer composition, having the same name as the subtitle. It is now the definitive version of that piece.

It is, emotionally, a tearful goodby to the world that was before, with hopeful feelings of the new world.

Symphonic Poem # 3 – On Our Way

This piece is my orchestration of my earlier synthesizer composition, having the same name as the subtitle. It is now the definitive version of that piece. I actually orchestrated it before the “# 2” piece above.

To me, it captures the feeling of setting out on a cross-country bicycle adventure – you can even feel the heart pumping.

Symphonic Poem # 4 – Awakening

This is my second composition, composed for symphony orchestra, after having gained experience doing orchestrations. My craft has improved, doing the other orchestrations, and I like it a lot better than the first one.

The subtitle refers to the awakening at the beginning of great quest.

It has a wild ending, which I originally conceived for that symphony I was working in my late teen years.

Symphonic Poem # 5 – Fly Away

This piece is my orchestration of an earlier piano composition, having the same name as the subtitle. It is now the definitive version of that piece – much better than the synthesizer version.

It comes from a youthful vision of wanting to fly away from the troubles growing up, to my impossible dream, which much later, came true!

Symphonic Poem # 6 – Snowstorm

I composed this piano piece in my mid-teen years. Now, in retirement, I have orchestrated it, adding new music. Young and old, making music together. The piano piece (my first) was called "Etude in B-flat Major", but the orchestration keeps its subtitle: "Snowstorm".

Piano Concerto # 1 - 1st movement

I've orchestrated my piano sonata into a full-blown piano concerto - all 3 movements. It's a piano concerto that competent pianists can actually perform - no Julliard master classes required. I composed the piano part in my late teens.

Symphonic Poem # 8 – Tumult, and Resolution

Bugles are heard above the din of battle, the tide turning back and forth. The spectre of defeat looms, and yet clarity and hope emerges from the ashes.

Intermezzo # 2, for Orchestra

I arranged my piano Intermezzo # 2 for symphony orchestra.

Can you feel the oppressive heat? On a very hot day in 1967, I came in from the heat, sat down at the piano, and the first section of this piece was born.
